What is Google Vids? An Overview of the New Google Video Creation App

In 2024, Google began rolling out Google Vids—a new AI-powered video creation app for work—for select Google Workspace Business, Enterprise, Education plans, and the Gemini add-on. Currently, most of these customers can access Vids at vids.new and explore how the solution fits their specific work needs. If you already have a corresponding Google Workspace license, this video editor is free for you.

Stand Out at Work with Videos

We’ve all been there: overflowing inboxes, endless meetings, and constant notifications make it harder to focus on lengthy reports and emails. Research shows that the average attention span has shrunk to just 47 seconds when viewing specific content. This means that as a communicator, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get your message across when it truly matters.

We already use video extensively in our personal lives for communication and learning. So why not apply it at work? Typically, it’s because video creation tools are too complex, expensive, and require specialized skills. But Vids is designed to change that.

What is Vids?

Google Vids is a new Google Workspace app for creating videos using artificial intelligence, seamlessly integrated into the collaboration ecosystem of tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Designed by Google specialists with generative AI, Vids makes crafting visual stories at work simpler and more accessible for all employees—without requiring specialized skills or separate software licenses. One early tester described it as being “as easy as creating presentations in Slides.” Vids streamlines video creation with an intuitive scene editor and familiar commenting and sharing processes.

Getting Started with Vids

With Gemini in Vids, you can quickly kick off your project using the “Help Me Create” feature. It generates an initial draft of your video based on your prompt and content from Google Drive. Media files, text, scripts, and background music are also provided to help you shape your narrative. If you already have a concept in mind, you can choose from a variety of video templates organized by use case.

Gemini in Vids makes video creation accessible to everyone by offering a fully editable structure with suggested scenes, stock materials, and other elements—all generated based on your prompt and file.

Deliver Your Message

Recording a video can be challenging, especially if you feel uncomfortable in front of the camera or don’t know where to start. The built-in recording studio addresses these issues and helps you confidently convey your message. Here’s how we simplify the video recording process:

  • Scene scripts suggested by Gemini for every segment.
  • A variety of professional AI-generated voiceovers that can be easily added.
  • A teleprompter with scrolling or reading features to help you confidently engage with your audience.

Unleash Your Creativity

In addition to the video editor, a free package of millions of stock media files will be available to you in one click. You can also use Gemini in Vids to create custom images and effortlessly add features that make your videos more dynamic, such as animations, transitions, or motion effects for static visuals.

Who Can Use Vids?

Teams are already incorporating video into their workflows for tasks like product demos or meeting recordings. However, our early testers and customers have impressed us with innovative ways to use Vids online video editor:

  • Customer service teams create training videos to scale support. If the product interface changes, they can simply replace a single scene instead of creating a new video.
  • Leaders use Vids to build stronger connections with employees by sharing company updates in a more personalized way.
  • Learning and development teams produce videos for large-scale employee training and onboarding processes.
  • Marketers create videos summarizing events or campaign updates. Seamless collaboration between teams allows, for instance, a leader to add key takeaways to internal newsletters.
  • Project teams use Vids as a unique way to summarize meetings or share insights from lengthy reports, helping maintain attention and keep colleagues informed.
